Crew 1's Roaring 20's Speak Easy won 1st place in the campsite competition at the 2010 International Scout Rally in Hessel MI. The rally theme this year was "Through the Decades" and our 1920's speak easy (hidden in the old Hessel Spat Company building) was complete with jazz music, flappers, gangsters and bootleg cider. Patrons also enjoyed a few round of old fashioned marbles in the "game area". Congratulations to all Crew members & adult volunteers that made it all work. Remember - It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Rachel Cromell Selected for Venturing Leadership Award
The Venturing Leadership Award is presented by BSA Councils to Venturers who have made exceptional contributions to Venturing and who exemplify the Venturing Code and Oath. The Scenic Trails Council is presenting this award for the first time in 2009 and our Crew President, Rachel Cromell has been selected to receive it! It will be presented at the Council's Annual Recognition Ceremony on October 18 in Traverse City.
Rachel's dedication of time & effort to Crew 1 and her leadership and service to the Crew over the past 3 years has been instrumental in the growth & success of our Venture Crew. We are all very proud of her and very pleased she is receiving this recognition!
The Venturing Code
As a Venturer, I believe that America's strength lies in our trust in God and in the courage, strength and traditions of our people.
I will, therefore, be faithful in my religious duties and wil maintain a personal sense of honor in my life.
I will treasure my American heritage and will do all I can to preserve and enrich it.
I will recognize the dignity and worth of all humanity and will use fair play and goodwill in my daily life.
I will acquire the Venturing attitude that seeks the truth in all things and adventure on the frontiers of our changing world.

Spring Cleaning on the Bike Path!
Venture Crew 1 scoured the the North Central (Gaylord to Mackinaw) Bike Trail between Gaylord & Vanderbilt on May 17th and hauled out wagon loads of litter. This was a great community service project and the trail looks terrific! You all should be proud of your efforts!
Participants included Christopher, Rianne, Caila, Devin, Rachel, Nick & Bobby. And a big thanks to the adults who pitched in - Mr & Mrs Coale, Mr. Cromell and Nick & Rachel's grandparents. Mr. Marsh also attended and wishes his great personal sacrifice (missing the Red Wings playoff game on TV) to be acknowledged.
The Crew enjoyed pizza & hot wings afterwards and went "on-line" to design our new Class B shirts (see picture!) Kudos to the Crew for coming up with this outstanding community service project. Let's make it an annual one!

VLSC
Crew 1 members had a great time at the Venture Leaderships Skills Course in Charlevoix last weekend! The skills worked on will really help our crew go & grow! Crew 11 was a great host and their leaders put on a terrific program with lots of fun thrown in. We are planning a joint outing / get-together with Crew 11 sometime soon so we can have another opportunity to party with those friendly folks.
PS - Here's a tip from Rianne - always bring an extra pair of pants!
